Earlier this year The Chainsmokers’ newest album “So Far So Good” was released to the public on Royal, an open market for the “new era of true ownership of music assets”. Royal allows fans to buy music rights via nonfungible tokens (NFTs). Its co-founders are entrepreneurs JD Ross and DJ Justin Blau, who goes by the stage name 3LAU. In late 2021, they closed an impressive $55 million Series A funding round following a $16-million seed round in August.
In a partnership with web3 music investment platform Royal, The Chainsmokers were the first major label artists to share royalties of an entire album for free. Back in May, they released 5,000 NFTs where holders were able to share 1% of streaming royalties.
More recently, The Chainsmokers partnered up with Columbia Records, and Sony Music Entertainment to create the Festival Tycoon experience in Roblox. Festival Tycoon has apparently topped 18 million visits in less than a month. Players can build their own music festivals, with pyrotechnics, merch booths, backstage VIP areas, amusement park rides, and more. The Chainsmokers Concert Experience, which celebrated the launch of Festival Tycoon, became the all-time highest-rated concert performance in Roblox history.
