The National Football League (NFL), NFL Players Association (NFLPA), Sports Illustrated and blockchain game maker Mythical Games announced a partnership to launch “NFL Rivals”. This title will be a new NFL video game that leverages blockchain technology. The planned release is set for the Mythical Platform set for early 2023. Mythical Games is backed by Andreessen Horowitz and recently raised $150 million at a $1.25 billion valuation. To date, the gaming studio has raised an impressive $270 million.
NFL Rivals is going to be a fantasy league style game which will allow NFL fans to compete against other “general managers” with their assembled player rosters and teams. Building, leveling up, and improving their lineup to compete against one another. In addition, fans will be able to own, collect, and trade non-fungible tokens (NFTs) of their favorite players through the “play-and-own” game experience.
Joe Ruggiero, senior vice president of consumer products at the NFL, stated: “With the rise of blockchain technology, we are thrilled to partner with Mythical Games on a blockchain-enabled game that delivers new play-to-own NFT capabilities, creating a new adventure for fans who love to play football games.”
