Animoca Brands has remained strong in its metaverse investments this year, leading several funding rounds including a $32 million Series A for Planetarium Labs in July 2022. Animoca received a reported valuation of $5.9 billion earlier this year, they also raised an additional $110 million on September 12th in a round led by Temasek. True Global Ventures 4 Plus also participated in the round with a $38 million investment. This was previously reported on my RE3W and GFP earlier this month.

The strategic consortium of new investors, formed by Temasek, Boyu Capital, and GGV Capital, will apparently provide advice to Animoca as it continues to grow and build its organizational capabilities. This will include engaging and advising Animoca on a range of business issues as well as providing input on its business and capital plans.

The Singaporean sovereign wealth fund, whose net portfolio value stood at $403 billion as of March 2022, has been an active investor in the crypto industry, leading a $200 million round in liquidity provider and market maker Amber Group in February 2022. It also joined crypto exchange FTX US’s $400 million Series A round in January.
Animoca raised $75 million in July in a round that was led by existing investors Liberty City Ventures, 10T, and Kingsway Capital in the second tranche of a January funding that brought in almost $360 million. The Hong Kong-based company’s portfolio contains more than 150 NFT-related projects, including trading platform OpenSea and Dapper Labs, the developer of NBA Top Shot.
Spire stated that they are planning to use the new capital to continue building out the team, tools, real-time pipeline, and cloud-first infrastructure needed to produce the “highest quality” animated feature films with “stronger collaboration and greater efficiency”. The next-generation film studio will also simultaneously create worlds and experiences for the metaverse through Epic’s Unreal Engine.
The new funding supplements Spire’s previous financing led by Epic Games along with existing investor Connect Ventures, an investment partnership formed by Creative Artists Agency (CAA) and New Enterprise Associates (NEA). Spire Animation Studios had raised $20 million from Epic Games and others back in February. Its aiming to produce animated films for the metaverse.
Immutable has just announced the launch of a $500 million Developer and Venture Fund for web3 games and NFT projects. Immutable said the fund will collaborate with crypto and gaming investors including big names such as BITKRAFT, Animoca, Arrington Capital, Double Peak, Airtree, King River Capital and GameStop. The new Developer and Venture Fund will also build on the Immutable X protocol through token grants and investments – $IMX being Immutable X’s native token.
The Immutable Developer and Venture Fund has invested in web3 companies and NFT startups including Starkware, Stardust, PlanetQuest and Kongregate. Some of the names already building on Immutable include GameStop, TikTok, Opensea, Ember Sword and more.
