The Solana network just announced they will be developing their own web3 mobile phone called “Saga”. The phone will be an Android handset made by Solana Labs. The “Solana Mobile Stack” software was revealed at NFT NYC. The co-founder and CEO of Solana, Anatoly Yakovenko stated that this will be the “beginning of a new era of web3 with mobile-first Android platforms”.
The device will be a modified OSOM handset with specialty crypto wallet functions and the “Solana Mobile Stack (SMS)” software development kit built for web3 programs. It will apparently cost about $1,000 and be available for online ordering in early 2023. The phone will feature a web3 dapp (decentralized app) store, integrated “Solana Pay” to facilitate QR code-based on-chain payments, a mobile wallet adapter, and a “seed vault” that will store private keys on the phone.
Solana Labs said it will work with other web3 companies to power the ecosystem to build the phone. This will include Magic Eden, which is one of the most popular NFT marketplaces. As well as Phantom, which is a mainstream crypto wallet provider. And lastly, Orca – the decentralized finance platform. The Solana Foundation has apparently already pledged $10 million toward the development of mobile apps on its SMS.
